The origins of Queenslands woollen textile industry began with the people of Ipswich keen to invest in an important new industry for the colony of Queensland. The Queensland Woollen Manufacturing Company came was inspired by incentives of a government, keen to attract new technologies and a skilled labour force, and the people of Ipswich wanting a future for their families.

The first prospectus was issued in 1874. The first woollen textiles came off the looms in 1877.

The former mill building pictured is on Queensland’s state heritage register. The building shown was built in1890.
