Another engaging workshop was held yesterday.

The workshop is being repeated Tuesday Morning (15/8) at 9:30, and Thursday (17/8) at Firestation 101.

There is still time to book here.

At the workshop, Janis speaks to more of the history and shows images of a range of archival materials – blankets, labels, fabrics, news clippings, documents etc.

Janis also shows a set of images of the mill’s interior as it is currently.

Deborah shows step by step her process of taking archival images and creating stencils from them.

During the workshop Deborah demonstrates using the positive and negative spaces created by stencils to interpret the historical image on layers of cheesecloth. Participants get to join in.

What is really interesting is that the collaborative process continued with people chatting about ways to bring their own arts practices together.

In the informal chats during and after, possible layers in a work could include eco-dyeing, felting of different kinds including nuno, and needle felting, hand woven pieces, poetry, and voice.

The spinners and weavers were keen to create pieces with a mill- based provenance, for example, spinning yarns at the mill site, or using leaves and bark from trees at the Redbank mill site for eco-dyeing.

These ideas are just the beginning …

Meanwhile, here are some images from yesterday.
